(What qualifies you to University/college).
To qualify for university in South Africa, you need to pass your National Senior Certificate (NSC) with the right level of achievement. Universities use three different pass levels to determine if you qualify: Bachelor’s Degree Pass (University Entry Level)/ pass level 3 (higher certificate) qualifies you to a college.
This is the highest level of achievement and is required for entry into degree programs at universities. To qualify, you need:
At least 40% in your home language (English, Afrikaans, or another recognized language).
At least 50% in four other subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
At least 30% in one other subject.
An APS score that meets the university’s program requirements.
A diploma pass allows you to study at TVET colleges, some universities, and universities of technology. To qualify, you need:
At least 40% in your home language.
At least 40% in four other subjects.
At least 30% in two additional subjects.
This level allows entry into certificate programs and foundation courses. To qualify, you need:
At least 40% in your home language.
At least 30% in two subjects.
At least 30% in three other subjects.
Some programs may also require additional steps, such as portfolios for creative courses or entrance exams for competitive fields.
The Admission Point Score (APS) is the system universities use to determine whether you qualify for a program. Your APS is calculated based on your final matric marks. Each percentage range is assigned a specific number of points.
Example APS Calculation: If a student gets the following results:
English: 75% (6 points)
Mathematics: 68% (5 points)
Life Science: 80% (7 points)
Physical Science: 55% (4 points)
Business Studies: 60% (5 points)
History: 70% (6 points)
Total APS = 6 + 5 + 7 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 33
Different degree programs have different APS cut-off scores. The more competitive the course, the higher the APS needed.
Required APS: 35+ (varies by university).
High marks needed in Mathematics, Physical Science, and Life Science.

Many students improve their APS by rewriting key subjects through the Second Chance Matric Programme.
Some universities offer bridging courses to help students qualify for their desired degree programs.
Some students start with a diploma or higher certificate and later transfer into a degree program.
If university isn’t an option, TVET colleges offer career-focused qualifications that can lead to great job opportunities.
